Reddit vs X vs Facebook Image Preview Test 2026: 8 Hosts on 3 Platforms
Sharing Image Links on Social Media — and the Preview Just Won't Show
I was recently putting together social media marketing assets and needed to post image links on Reddit, X (Twitter), and Facebook. I ran into a frustrating problem: some image hosts produce links with zero preview — just a raw URL string.
This has been bugging me for a while. Imgur used to work flawlessly, but after Imgur became increasingly unfriendly to users in certain regions, switching to other image hosts revealed that not every service lets social platforms pull preview images correctly.
So I spent three days uploading the same test image to 8 different image hosts, then tested sharing on Reddit, X, and Facebook. Here are the full results.
Test Methodology
To ensure a fair comparison, here are the test conditions:
- Test Image: A 2400×1600 px JPEG, 1.8 MB file size
- Upload Date: March 30, 2026 — all uploads completed the same day
- Test Platforms: Reddit (new UI), X (formerly Twitter), Facebook (personal feed)
- Test Method: Paste the direct image URL into the post composer and observe whether a preview is auto-generated
- Wait Time: 60 seconds after pasting, to allow platform crawlers to fetch the preview
- Test Region: Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom, no VPN)
The 8 image hosts tested: lpic.cc, Imgur, ImgBB, Postimages, Catbox, Freeimage.host, imgbox, Upload.cc.
Results Overview
Here's the results matrix:
| Image Host | Reddit Preview | X Preview | Facebook Preview | Direct Link Works | og:image Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| lpic.cc | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | Yes | Yes |
| Imgur | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | Yes (accessible in Taiwan) | Yes |
| ImgBB | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | Yes | Yes |
| Postimages | Displays correctly | Blurry thumbnail | Displays correctly | Yes (free tier 1280px) | Yes |
| Catbox | Displays correctly | Displays correctly | No preview | Yes | No |
| Freeimage.host | Displays correctly | No preview | No preview | Partially | No |
| imgbox | No preview | No preview | No preview | Yes | No |
| Upload.cc | No preview | No preview | Displays correctly | Partially | Partial |
Only 3 passed all three platforms perfectly: lpic.cc, Imgur, and ImgBB.
How Each Platform Generates Previews
Before diving into per-host details, here's how each platform generates link previews:
Reddit's preview mechanism is relatively lenient. It tries two approaches:
- Parse the page's
og:imagemeta tag - If the URL points directly to an image file (ending in .jpg/.png), embed the image directly
So even without og:image support, as long as the host provides a direct image URL, Reddit can usually display it correctly.
X (Twitter)
X's preview mechanism (Twitter Cards) is stricter:
- Requires correct
twitter:cardorog:imagemeta tags - Image URL must be HTTPS
- Recommended image size is at least 300×157 px; optimal is 1200×628 px
- Server must respond to X's crawler within 5 seconds
I found that X's support for direct image URLs is weaker than Reddit's — if you paste a bare .jpg URL, X may not render it as a preview. It relies more heavily on og:image meta tags.
Facebook uses the Open Graph protocol to fetch previews:
- The crawler (facebookexternalhit) fetches the URL's og:image
- Minimum image size is 200×200 px; recommended 1200×630 px
- Facebook caches preview images and won't re-fetch shortly after the initial crawl
- Important: Facebook validates CORS settings — if the image host's server blocks Facebook's crawler, no preview will appear
Detailed Test Results Per Host
lpic.cc
After uploading the image to lpic.cc and getting the share link, I posted it to all three platforms. Reddit showed the preview almost instantly. X displayed the Twitter Card preview after about 3 seconds. Facebook generated the preview image after about 5 seconds.
Preview image resolution was good on all three platforms — no noticeable blurring or cropping issues. lpic.cc's share page has properly configured og:image and twitter:card meta tags, which is why all three platforms could fetch previews successfully.
Imgur
Imgur has always had excellent preview support — it was designed for social sharing. All three platforms displayed previews correctly. One note: if you use Imgur's direct image URL (i.imgur.com/xxx.jpg), X occasionally fails to show a preview. Using Imgur's share page URL (imgur.com/xxx) is more reliable.
ImgBB
ImgBB also performed well — all three platforms displayed preview images correctly. Its share page has complete Open Graph tags. Worth noting: ImgBB's og:image points to a compressed version, so preview images load quickly.
Postimages
Postimages worked fine on Reddit and Facebook, but I noticed the preview image on X was somewhat blurry. This is because Postimages' free tier hotlinks are downscaled to 1280px, so X's crawler fetched the smaller version. If your original image is high resolution, the X preview may not be sharp enough.
Catbox
Catbox had an interesting result. It displayed correctly on Reddit (since Reddit can embed image URLs directly) and X, but Facebook showed no preview at all.
Using Facebook's Sharing Debugger tool, I found that Catbox's direct URLs don't return og:image meta tags (since it's a pure file host, not an image sharing platform). Facebook's crawler also appeared to be blocked when trying to fetch the image file directly.
Freeimage.host
Freeimage.host displayed on Reddit (via direct image linking), but showed no preview on X or Facebook. Developer tools revealed that while its share page has og:image tags, the referenced URL returned 403 Forbidden. The likely cause is hotlink protection blocking X and Facebook crawlers.
imgbox
imgbox performed worst in this test — no preview on any of the three platforms. The analysis: imgbox uses a non-standard URL path structure, and og:image tags are missing. Even when Reddit tried to embed the direct image URL, imgbox appeared to block external referencing.
Upload.cc
Upload.cc only displayed a preview on Facebook. Reddit and X both failed. This was unexpected. My theory is that Facebook's crawler User-Agent happened not to be blocked by Upload.cc, while Reddit and X crawlers were identified as unauthorized requests and rejected.
Three Main Reasons Previews Fail
From this test, I identified three primary causes of social preview failures:
1. Missing og:image Meta Tags
This is the most common cause. If the image host's share page doesn't include Open Graph og:image tags, Facebook and X can't determine which image to use as a preview.
<!-- Correct og:image setup -->
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/image.jpg" />
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200" />
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630" />
2. Hotlink Protection Blocking Crawlers
Some image hosts restrict images to being referenced only from specific domains to save bandwidth. This causes Facebook and X crawlers to receive 403 Forbidden when attempting to fetch images, so no preview is generated.
3. HTTPS / Mixed Content Issues
Both X and Facebook require og:image URLs to use HTTPS. If the image host uses HTTP or has SSL certificate issues, previews won't display. In 2026, this should be rare, but older services like Upload.cc may still have this problem.
Optimal Preview Image Dimensions
If you're a social media marketer or content manager, here are the optimal preview image dimensions for each platform:
| Platform | Optimal Preview Size | Minimum Size | Aspect Ratio | Max File Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1200×628 px | No strict limit | 1.91:1 | 20 MB | |
| X (Twitter Card) | 1200×628 px | 300×157 px | 1.91:1 | 5 MB |
| 1200×630 px | 200×200 px | 1.91:1 | 8 MB | |
| Discord | 1200×628 px | No strict limit | Any | 25 MB |
| LINE | 1200×628 px | No strict limit | 1.91:1 | 10 MB |
You'll notice 1200×628 px is the universal sweet spot. If you only want to prepare one preview image size, use this.
My Recommendation: Test Social Previews Before Choosing an Image Host
Many people choose image hosts based solely on upload speed and storage limits, overlooking the question of "will previews display correctly when shared on social media?" If you frequently share image links on Reddit, X, or Facebook, run a quick preview test before committing to a host:
- Upload a test image
- Check og:image with Facebook Sharing Debugger
- Check Twitter Card with X Card Validator
- Test in an actual Reddit post
If you don't have time to test each one, based on my results, lpic.cc, Imgur, and ImgBB are the most reliable options across all three platforms. lpic.cc requires no registration and offers password protection but doesn't provide an API; ImgBB has an API but comes with ads; Imgur has the most features but uploading from Taiwan IPs is blocked.
FAQ
Q1: Why isn't my image link showing a preview on Facebook?
The most common cause is the image host's share page missing og:image meta tags, or the image host server blocking Facebook's crawler (facebookexternalhit). Use Facebook Sharing Debugger to paste the URL and check — it will tell you exactly what went wrong.
Q2: X (Twitter) is only showing a link, not an image preview — what can I do?
X's Card preview requires the page to have correct twitter:card and og:image tags. If the image host doesn't support these, an alternative is to upload the image directly to X (rather than posting an external link), or switch to an image host with proper og:image support.
Q3: Why do Reddit image link previews work sometimes but not others?
Reddit has two preview methods: og:image tags and direct image embedding. If you use a share page URL (like imgbb.com/xxx), Reddit will try to read og:image. If you use a direct image URL (like i.imgbb.com/xxx.jpg), Reddit will embed it directly. When the direct URL is blocked by the host's hotlink protection, no preview appears.
Q4: Facebook cached the old preview image — how do I update it?
Facebook caches preview images. If you've updated the image but Facebook still shows the old one, go to Facebook Sharing Debugger, enter the URL, and click "Scrape Again" to force Facebook to re-fetch it.
Q5: Is there an image host that lets me customize the og:image preview?
Most free image hosts don't support custom og:image. If you need full control over how previews appear, the best approach is to host a simple image sharing page yourself and set the meta tags manually. Alternatively, use a static site service like Cloudflare Pages with custom HTML pages to control Open Graph tags.
Conclusion
Social media image previews may seem like a minor detail, but they have a major impact on marketing effectiveness. A link without a preview image can see click-through rates drop by 50% or more compared to one with a preview. When choosing an image host, make sure to factor in social preview compatibility.
